A friend of mine had her first baby last year. Being a first time mother, she was concerned about many aspects of her child, including the baby’s teeth. She wanted to know how she could prevent tooth decay in her newborn, something she had noticed in other children.
Early childhood tooth decay (baby bottle tooth decay) is caused by sweet liquids left in the childs mouth. These liquids include milk, formula, as well as fruit juice. Several preventative measures can be taken to prevent baby bottle tooth decay:
1. Never allow your child to fall asleep with a bottle containing sweet liquids.
2. Use a clean pacifier instead of a bottle when your child needs a comforter at night or during naps.
3. Begin brushing your child’s teeth when the first tooth appears. Clean your baby’s gums with a clean gauze pad after each feeding.
4. Start dental visits by the first birthday. If you think that your child has dental problems, see a dentist as soon as possible.
