Implant Dentistry

A dental implant replaces a missing tooth by placing a artificial tooth root into your jaw to hold a replacement crown or bridge. More simply, implants replace the roots of teeth that were lost. Implants typically involve embedding titanium posts into the jawbone and then placing plastic or porcelain teeth over the implant. Implants can take up to several months to complete due to the time needed for the bone to fuse with the implant.

Below are a few types of Implant Dentistry:

Crowns

Dental crowns are used to restore strength and appearance of broken or weakened teeth. They are typically used when a significant amount of tooth structure is lost and when placing a filling would jeopardize the integrity of the tooth or compromise the aesthetics or strength. A crown covers the tooth, strengthening as well as improving its cosmetic appearance. Crowns will generally cover the top and sides of the tooth in order to hold it together to prevent further damage to the teeth. With the porcelain crowns available today, it will look completely natural and will be impossible to distinguish from natural teeth. Bridges

Dental bridges provide the same functionality as an implant by replacing missing teeth. However, a dental bridge works by fusing the false tooth between existing teeth. Bridges are used when there are one or more teeth missing and there is a need to stabilize the bite, prevent the adjacent teeth from tilting, and the opposing teeth from dropping down. The dental bridge gives a very natural appearance, fills in gaps to improve functionality, and helps to prevent surrounding teeth from getting misaligned. Contact us to see if dental bridges can help improve your smile.

Implants

Dental implants can be used to replace one or more missing teeth. With implants, you do not have to worry about wearing dentures. Dental implants will replace your entire tooth as well as the root. Since dental implants mimic your natural teeth, they will give you a realistic smile without anyone knowing you have an implant. When complete, it will provide the same strength and functionality as a natural tooth, improving your chewing and increasing your comfort.

Implants require the close coordination between the dentist and the oral surgeon. The procedure for implants consists of a surgical portion done by a specialist and a restorative portion which is done at our office. We will work closely with either a local oral surgeon or periodontist who would place the actual implant fixture. Please contact us if you have questions about dental implant or would like a consultation.
